Vocabulary is a word used for describing the number of words which one is familiar with & using it at the appropriate time. Hence, it improves fluency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.How to improve English vocabulary is the main concern for beginners.

Before we understand the sources of learning vocabulary, first we must understand the number of targeted words.

  • If we want to converse simply with the people, 3000 to 4000 words are sufficient.
  • If we target for an advance level like if we want to study or work among the native speakers of that language, 6000 to 10000 database of words will be required.
  • If we want to speak fluently like native speakers, 10000 to 15000 words will do.

  1. Dictionary apps:- These apps can be downloaded and referred to as and when required. It is not necessary that you memorize all of them at once. If you come across a word which has been used in a conversation or a reading material, look it up in the dictionary app and write it down on a piece of paper or note it on your phone so that you do not forget it.
  2. Watching English movies with subtitles:- It will help in memorizing the meaning, pronunciation, spelling of that particular word. This way, you develop interest in learning new words along with improving your fluency in English language by watching English movies/TV shows/news etc.
  3. Listening songs:- songs in a particular language provides you words along with rythm so it is easier to recall them later on while writing or speaking English language. You can listen to songs of your choice on YouTube or download free English music from iTunes store.
  4. Watching English News:- News channels also provide news with subtitles & our brain captures & recalls visuals quickly comparative to other methods.According to research, it has been found that our brain learns better if there is a mental picture of an object or an action. For example, if we see a picture with a word then our brain memorizes that particular word easily as well as its meaning.
  5. ‘Word of the day’ Feed:- There are many platforms on the net which provide access to the word of the day feeds. Subscribe it and keep yourself updated with the word of the day. This will help you build your library of new words gradually which you can use in daily conversations.
  6. Playing Word Games:-Crossword Puzzles can be a better option for game lovers.
  7. Synonyms:- Use synonyms of words already learned. This will make the language look richer.
  8. Using Mnemonics:- It is a technique of remembering words associating them with some other things. For e.g., if I want to learn words like Democracy, Dictatorship, Fraternity. I can associate these words with what is going on in my country & in other countries.
  9. Maintaining your own dictionary:- Keep a running list of new or unusual words that you encounter. All words which have been learned must be written in your own dictionary.
  10. Practicing:- It is not only the matter of jotting it down but also implementing those words in daily conversation so that become indelible from memory.Learn new words by using them, not just writing them down.

Whatever methods are adopted, one has to keep in mind the realistic goals of learning vocabulary. Daily 5 words can be set as a limit.
